Analytic and numerical study of preheating dynamics.

چکیده
We analyze the phenomenon of preheating, i.e. explosive particle production due to parametric amplification of quantum fluctuations in the unbroken symmetry case, or spinodal instabilities in the broken symmetry phase, using the Minkowski space O(N) vector model in the large N limit to study the non-perturbative issues involved. We give analytic results for weak couplings and times short compared to the time at which the fluctuations become of the same order as the tree level terms, as well as numerical results including the full backreaction. In the case where the symmetry is unbroken, the analytical results agree spectacularly well with the numerical ones in their common domain of validity. In the broken symmetry case, interesting situations, corresponding to slow roll initial conditions from the unstable minimum at the origin, give rise to a new and unexpected phenomenon: the dynamical relaxation of the vacuum energy. That is, particles are abundantly produced at the expense of the quantum vacuum energy while the zero mode comes back to almost its initial value. In both cases we obtain analytically and numerically the equation of state which in both cases can be written in terms of an effective polytropic index that interpolates between vacuum and radiation-like domination. We find that simplified analysis based on harmonic behavior of the zero mode, giving rise to a Mathieu equation for the non-zero modes miss important physics. Furthermore analysis that do not include the full backreaction do not conserve energy, resulting in unbound particle production. Our results do not support the recent claim of symmetry restoration by non-equilibrium fluctuations. Finally estimates of the reheating temperature are given, as well ∗Laboratoire Associé au CNRS UA280.

Cosmological Simulations of the Preheating Scenario for Galaxy Cluster Formation: Comparison to Analytic Models and Observations
We perform a set of non–radiative cosmological simulations of a preheated intracluster medium in which the entropy of the gas was uniformly boosted at high redshift. The results of these simulations are used first to test the current analytic techniques of preheating via entropy input in the smooth accretion limit. When the unmodified profile is taken directly from simulations, we find that thi...
متن کاملTx Relation: Evidence for a High Level of Preheating
Recent X-ray observations have been used to demonstrate that the cluster gas mass temperature relation is steeper than theoretical self-similar predictions drawn from numerical simulations that consider the evolution of the cluster gas through the effects of gravity and shock heating alone. One possible explanation for this is that the gas mass fraction is not constant across clusters of differ...
متن کاملPreheating in an expanding universe: Analytic results for the massless case
Analytic results are presented for preheating in both flat and open models of chaotic inflation, for the case of massless inflaton decay into further inflaton quanta. It is demonstrated that preheating in both these cases closely resembles that in Minkowski spacetime. Furthermore, quantitative differences between preheating in spatially flat and open models of inflation remain of order 10 for t...
متن کاملAnalytic Approaches to Understanding the Distribution and Evolution of Intracluster Gas
I will briefly review various analytic approaches to understanding the contents and properties of the hot X-ray emitting gas contained in clusters and groups. Special emphases are given to the following three issues: (1)Reconstruction of the gas distribution in groups and clusters from a (joint) analysis of X-ray, SZ and gravitational lensing observations; (2)Test of the analytic density profil...
متن کاملGlobal Stabilization of Attitude Dynamics: SDRE-based Control Laws
The State-Dependant Riccati Equation method has been frequently used to design suboptimal controllers applied to nonlinear dynamic systems. Different methods for local stability analysis of SDRE controlled systems of order greater than two such as the attitude dynamics of a general rigid body have been extended in literature; however, it is still difficult to show global stability properties of...
